New Zealand-based syndicators Go Racing celebrated yet another successful Saturday of racing on both sides of the Tasman, with success from both young and old.
Three-year-old filly Diss Is Dramatic sounded an ominous warning to her classic contemporaries with a determined win against her mostly male counterparts in the Gr.3 War Decree Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton.
The Lisa Latta-trained daughter of Dissident bounced to the lead from barrier four and set up a steady tempo in front before rider Tina Comignaghi asked her to extend at the 400m. Despite being challenged by the favourite Cognito and his stablemate Malborough Bay, she pulled away to win by 1.3 lengths on the line.
“She was very good with the blinkers on she went straight to the front and kicked brilliantly in the finish,” said Go Racing’s Albert Bosma.
“She was probably only at ninety-five percent today because we want to go fourth up into the Guineas with her at one-hundred percent.”
The question remains which Guineas that will be with the filly nominated for both the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai 50thNew Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) on November 5 against the males and the fillies classic a week later, the Barneswood Farm 50th New Zealand 1000 Guineas.
“We’ve got the option of either or both,” said Albert. “We’ll make a call on that next week but first we’ll just let the dust settle and think about what the best option for her is.”
Bred by Cambridge Stud’s Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Diss Is Dramatic is by Dissident out of the winning Darci Brahma mare Our Drahma Queen, a half-sister to multiple Group One winner Suavito and Group winner Sultan of Swing.
She was purchased by Go Racing from Cambridge Stud’s 2021 Karaka Book 1 draft for $60,000.
Already a Listed winner as a two-year-old she now has over $113,000 in stakes earnings and valuable residual breeding value for her owners The Go Racing All About Me Syndicate.
Across the Tasman in New South Wales, superbly bred three-year-old colt Saveadateforme produced a facile win in the Master Builders Insurance Brokers Maiden Handicap (1400m) at Kembla Grange.
The John O’Shea-trained son of Savabeel came from last to score an easy two-and-a-half length win under jockey Alysha Collett at just his second start.
“He’s a pretty exciting horse,” said Albert. “He’ll probably just have one more run and then we’ll give him a little break before bringing him back in the autumn to target some big races.”
Bred by Waikato Stud, Saveadateforme is by Savabeel out of the multiple Group race winning O’Reilly filly Dating. He was purchased by Go Racing out of Waikato Stud’s 2021 Karaka Book 1 draft for $220,000.
Back in New Zealand it was time for the older brigade to shine, led by the Kylie Grass-trained seven-year-old Quick Preview, who won the NZB Ready To Run Trainers Series (1400m) fresh up paying $27.50.
“It was a great price despite his superb trial form so that was a little bit of a surprise but he had drawn the outside gate,” said Albert.
Ridden by Sam Spratt, Quick Preview was quick away coming across the field to sit in the one-one position before closing in on the leader, Deep Beauty at the 600m eventually getting his head in front on the line for a determined win.
“Kylie has done a great job getting him refreshed and he’s come back well,” said Albert. “He loves the good tracks so he should be in for a good summer.”
There were also a host of runner-up placings of note for the Go Racing team on Saturday with Deels Done in the NZB Airfreight Road To Jericho Rating 82 (3000m) at Riccarton, Flame of Venice in the Makybe Diva – Cox Plate Legend 0 – 58 Handicap (2082m) at Moe Starrybeel in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Stayers (2400m) at Te Rapa and Stardome in the This is Croser Open Quality Handicap (1615m) at Doomben.
“Starrybeel was excellent and he’s bang on for the New Zealand Cup,” said Albert. “The blinkers are yet to go on too which always improves him.”
The Stephen Marsh-trained son of Savabeel will run in the Listed Nautical Boat Insurance Metropolitan Trophy (2500m) at Riccarton on November 5 backing up in the Gr.3 Martin Collins 159th New Zealand Cup (3200m) on November 12.
Starrybeel may well join stablemate Deels Done at Riccarton following his run on Saturday.
“Deels Done was excellent and probably if there’d been a couple of showers of rain he would have won as he likes it wet,” said Albert.
“We’ll have a think about a late nomination for the New Zealand Cup with him.”
